the project

Jones Sports was contracted to install the new façade on TQL Stadium, home of the major league soccer team FC Cincinnati. FC Cincinnati’s Stadium Construction Manager, Turner Construction, approached us to support them on this contract. We collaborated with Turner and the architect, Populous to finalize the designs using innovative solutions to accomplish their vision.

The Challenge

Turner Construction asked for our expertise in building a one-of-a-kind stadium façade. The design challenge included 385 vertical fins with pixel-controlled lighting that would deliver video content. The contoured design of the façade added to the challenge with each of the fins being uniquely different in size with varying degrees of contour.

The Solution

Our design engineers understood that the key to creating the desired contour the stadium’s design required designing a substructure that would create the desired shape. The sub-structure design consists of radius tube horizontal supports and custom bracketry to mount the fins. The fins vary in size based on their location on the stadium, which allowed for the contoured design. Upping the excitement factor is the integrated LED pixel point system which allows video content to play over the entirety of the façade. This turns the façade into, essentially, one enormous video screen.

The Result

FC Cincinnati scored big with this façade, which is completely unique and exquisite in its design. Jones Sports' substructure solution created the contour that the designers intended and also provided the installation team with more flexibility when installing the fins. There are 14,370 linear feet of pixel stick and approximately 840,000 LEDs in the FC Cincinnati façade. The fins are architecturally interesting when not illuminated, but absolutely stunning when used to display video content during MLS games and events.
